Mastery Journal New Media Journalism

This month was very challenging for me. As a graduate of the PR Master’s program, I skipped several classes. Since this was my first class in The New Media Journalism program, I spent the month unable to get into stride or catch a rhythm.

I enjoyed learning how to research and read court documents. The most difficult and rewarding assignment was building a professional website. It’s hard for me to talk about myself or highlight my accomplishments. Creating the About Me page felt particularly uncomfortable. Thinking about what I’ve done in my career and what goals I’d like to accomplish in the future helped me tremendously with the website. Building the site as I envisioned my career goals helped with my shyness and professionally telling my story.

This isn’t the first time I’ve built a site for myself. However, the sites I’ve built in the past tended to have a flat, impersonal quality. Pushing past my weaknesses helps me build a better portfolio. Having a fully functional site gives me a digital office where readers, journalists, and media companies can interact with me.

**I don’t have a Mastery Journal. I assume creating one was an assignment in one of the classes I didn’t have to repeat as a former PR graduate.
